Welcome to the Refugee Union’s monthly roundup!  We would like to extend our warmest wishes to you for 2024. May this year bring you health, happiness, and success.

We are excited to share our latest updates and developments as we continue advocating for the rights and well-being of refugees in Hong Kong. This edition highlights key events from the past month, including our advocacy work, community outreach, and fundraising efforts. We hope this roundup offers a comprehensive overview of our work and inspires you to join our mission to create a more just and equitable society for all.

About Us

The Refugee Union is a community-based organisation, established in 2014 by refugees in Hong Kong. Our mission is to promote and protect the rights of refugees through advocacy, education, and community building. We work to empower refugees to become self-sufficient and active participants in their communities, while also advocating for policy changes that support their rights and well-being. Our organisation is run by refugees, for refugees, and we are dedicated to creating a more just and equitable society for all.

Activities at a Glance

On 5 January, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated Cantonese teachers for guiding us through the town, providing us fun experiences and learning opportunities.

On 12 January, we welcomed five students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, who joined us to gain insight into the experiences of refugees in Hong Kong.

On 13 January, heartfelt appreciation is due to kind-hearted volunteer Maria for organizing a children’s art class which was greatly enjoyed by the children who visited that afternoon – what a surprise!

On 15 January, we extend our gratitude to the volunteers at Youth Global Network for setting up an engaging sewing class and for their generous donation of a new sewing machine, which will be highly beneficial for our ladies to repair and alter clothes at home.

On 16 January, a big thank you goes to Grassroots Future for organising a meditation class in the park. We thoroughly enjoyed the relaxation, coupled with the warm sunshine and the joy of being surrounded by nature.

On 27 January, volunteers from the YMCA Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, offered several families a delightful day out. We all enjoyed the trip.

Giving is a Blessing

This month, we received a wide range of useful item donations. We would like to express our gratitude to those who have lent a helping hand. Your support means a lot to us, and we ensure all items received are distributed to refugees.
